The challenge
Matchday at a football club is live television without the crew: the scoreboard, the timer, the line-ups, the sponsor screens, and the teamsheets all have to be right, on time, every single week. At Scunthorpe United that meant juggling disconnected tools and manual processes at exactly the moment there's no room for error.
Off-the-shelf software doesn't drive a physical LED scoreboard in a stadium — so the club needed something built for how matchday actually runs.
What we built
We built Pitchbase: football club management software built around matchday. Its distinguishing feature is that it drives the stadium's physical LED scoreboard in real time — goals, cards, substitutions, the match timer, sponsor graphics, and videos — controlled from a phone on the touchline.
The platform is four pieces working as one: a web admin portal for squads, fixtures, sponsors, and scoreboard layouts; a mobile app for live touchline control; an app driving the LED panel itself from a stadium PC; and a cloud API with a realtime hub pushing every event to every screen instantly.
Around matchday sits the rest of club operations: squad and player management with photos and sponsor credits, a drag-and-drop Formation Manager, print-ready A4 teamsheets, fixture calendars with officials and attendance, a media library, and user permissions. The scoreboard caches everything locally, so a mid-match network drop never takes the board down.
- Physical LED scoreboard driven live from a phone
- Match events — goals, cards, subs, penalty shootouts
- Scoreboard layout editor with live preview
- Drag-and-drop Formation Manager with PNG export
- Print-ready A4 teamsheet generation
- Squads, fixtures, officials, and attendance
- Sponsor screens, graphics, and video playback
- Offline-resilient — the board survives network drops
- Realtime sync across every device via SignalR
The outcome
Scunthorpe United runs every home matchday on Pitchbase — one person on the touchline with a phone controls what thousands of fans see on the board. Built as a bespoke system for the club, it proved itself well enough that it's now being generalised into a product for other clubs.
